There are not many countries in Europe that generate more spectacular imagery than Slovakia with its national parks. No wonder! This little country has nine of them. The mythological mountains of High Tatras together with wildlife jungles of Slovak Paradise surely rank amongst the most iconic sceneries in Europe. This tour showcases the very best of the top five national parks – each of them embracing its unique natural landscape. Imagine green pastures, deep forests, canyons with wild rivers, crystal clear lakes to rocky hills and majestic snow-capped peaks, all waiting to be explored. Slovakia’s got 17 peaks reaching the heights over 2500 meters above sea level! And even more is hidden under the ground – a rare complex of ice and karst caves many of which are still not discovered. Slovak nature is also home to bears, wolves, lynxes, foxes, deers and hundreds of other animals you can possibly spot on your unforgettable journey with TIME FOR SLOVAKIA.

The first night we will be warmly welcomed in the small village of Terchová, the gateway to the National Park of Little Fatra. This park is famous for its alpine peaks with hectares of meadows bedecked with wildflowers. Next day you will be overwhelmed by the National Park of Low Tatras – the second highest mountain range in Slovakia and its unique cave. You will also explore the National Park of High Tatras and spend the night right in the middle of these high mountains, in a hotel situated on the strand of Poprad Lake. Feel like a real explorer when walking through the canyons of the National Park of Slovak Paradise and breathe the crisp mountain air deeply when we visit the National park of Pieniny rafting down the river Dunajec. You cannot leave without trying a real jewel of relaxation – a unique bath in the cave where the water reaches the temperature of 42 ºC! All this is yours on this varied tour of National Parks. Gorges in the National Park of the Little Fatra

Our tour guide will wait for you at your desired meeting point in Vienna, Bratislava or Budapest with a welcome drink and bring you safely to the picturesque village of Terchová, where your hotel is located. Leave your baggage in the hotel room and take a stroll through the streets of this nice village at your own pace. Terchová is the birthplace of Slovak Robin Hood Juraj Jánošík, who robbed nobles and gave the loot to the poor, as the legends say. You can hardly overlook the giant statue of this controversial hero looming on the hill right above the village.

If you arrive early in the village of Terchová, you will get a chance to visit charming gorges of Little Fatra mountains. Enjoy the wildlife and breathe the fresh air when walking on the trail which is secured by wooden and iron ladders, chains or grates.

Go for a drink in Terchová’s local pub and taste the delicious and incredibly cheap beer. Perhaps you will be lucky to see the villagers playing the traditional folk music of Terchová, which has been recently included in the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. But the main reason to spend our first night in this village is the fact that Terchová is the gateway to the National Park of Little Fatra. Get ready for tomorrow’s stunning trip.

Panoramic views from the National Park of the Little Fatra

After breakfast, we drive to the Vrátna valley in the National Park of the Little Fatra to take a modern 8-seat cable car to the summit of Snilovské Saddle (1524 m). Thanks to this possibility we don’t have to climb more than thousand vertical meters! Therefore, our mountain-ridge hike in Little Fatra will be very easy and still full of wonderful panoramic views over nearby valleys and peaks. We get off the cable car and hike uphill following the red sign trail to the highest peak of Little Fatra – the stunning Veľký Kriváň (1709 m). While enjoying 360-degree views, we descend to the peak of Chleb (1647 m) and continue walking on green alpine pastures of Little Fatra to the Hromové Saddle (1636 m). From here the ridge is getting sharper and the edge of the slope is very steep and rocky. Our next stop is the peak Poludňový Grúň (1460 m). We follow the yellow trail to the mountain chalet Na Grúni (973 m) where we take a lunch break and taste some of Slovak cuisine. After a short descent to the Vrátna valley, we return back to Terchová.

Estimated time for this hiking tour in Little Fatra: 4-5 hours.

National Park of the Low Tatras

This morning we visit one of the best attractions of the National Park of Low Tatras to visit an enchanting Demänovská Cave of Liberty. Don’t forget to take some warm clothes because the average temperature in the cave is close to only 7 °C. Thanks to its spectacular dripstone decorations this cave belongs to the most beautiful caves in Europe. A rich complex of stalactites and stalagmites together with little karst lakes creates an ideal environment for bats. Be patient, you will perhaps spot one of them hanging upside down!

After a lunch break, we will take the cable car to the top of the Low Tatras. Walk around the peaks reaching more than 2000 meters above sea level and enjoy the stunning panoramic views.

Estimated time for this hiking tour in the Low Tatras: 2-3 hours.

National Park of the High Tatras

Our trip continues to the National Park of High Tatras – the highest mountain range within the Carpathians! Every year thousands of hikers visit the High Tatras to challenge themselves on the peaks higher than 2500 m. As we approach the High Tatras you will instantly recognize one of its highest peaks – Kriváň (2494 m). Similarly as the Greeks have their Olympus and the Japanese their Fuji, Kriváň is the holy mountain of Slovaks, one of the national symbols. Tatra’s top tourist destination is undoubtedly Štrbské Pleso. We will have free time to have a lunch there. Take a walk around the huge glacial Štrbské Lake or visit Lakes of Love before we board our minivan and continue to the village of Tatranská Lomnica.

This will be something you’ll never forget! We take a cable car to Skalnaté Pleso Lake, which is situated right under the second highest peak of High Tatras – Lomnický peak. In the evening, we drive to the Popradske Pleso Lake to spend the night in the hotel situated right under the peaks of High Tatras.

Estimated time for this hiking tour in the High Tatras: 1-2 hours.

National Park of Slovak Paradise

Today we explore Slovakia’s delightfully diverse National Park of Slovak Paradise. You will immediately understand why this park is named a ‚Paradise‘. A huge area of undiscovered wilderness between the rivers Hornád and Hnilec contains an incredible number of creeks that formed gorges with waterfalls and a large spectrum of underground caves. Slovak Paradise is a home of various animal species such as falcons, squirrels, bears, foxes or otters and rare flowers attracting colorful butterflies.

Our trek in Slovak Paradise starts in the village of Čingov. After a few minutes of walking we reach Tomášovský view, a huge rock shelf with limestone wall higher than 200 metres – a true paradise for rock climbers. Our journey continues to the old Letanovsky mill where we start to follow the blue sign trail to enter the magical canyon Prielom Hornádu. We walk above the river Hornád on footbridges, grates and wooden ladders before we arrive at the most romantic places of Slovak Paradise – Kláštorská gorge. The track between waterfalls is secured by a number of wooden and iron ladders, chains or grates requiring a little caution. Alternatively, you can use the yellow trail to avoid walking on ladders. After an hour we come to the ruins of Cartesian monastery where we take a lunch break. The blue trail will lead us back to Čingov. Our home tonight will be a picturesque mountain village of Ždiar where we spend the night in traditional Slovak wooden houses.

Estimated time for this hiking tour in Slovak Paradise: 5-6 hours.

National Park of Pieniny

Let’s say our farewells to the exquisite village Ždiar and move to the National Park of Pieniny. The road twists amongst splendid woodland sceneries before we reach the village of Červený Kláštor, the gateway to the national park. Here we board the traditional wooden rafts of lumberjacks and drift down the river Dunajec as they used to do to transfer wood in the past centuries. Sit back, breathe the fresh air and let the surrounding nature restore your inner harmony. On our way back we hop on bikes and ride along lush, green river banks in the impressive Pieniny landscape. We savor a delicious meal in a local restaurant before we take the road further to the central parts of Slovakia.

We finish the day in a completely preserved medieval town of Banská Štiavnica, which was included in its entirety on the UNESCO World Heritage List. You can take a stroll in the streets to get a real sense of the atmosphere of the town’s rich history of gold and silver mining.

Cave bath & Mining lakes around Banská Štiavnica

Depending on your flight schedule we visit the spa town of Sklené Teplice to enjoy your well-earned relax in a unique cave bath. Its water temperature reaches unbelievable 42 ºC!

This area is full of mining lakes that were built and connected to each other for the needs of the silver and gold mines and today they are very popular places for hikers and weekenders. Take some beautiful pictures and enjoy the relaxing walk on the meadows right above the town of Banska Štiavnica.

Your tour ends at your desired drop-off location in Bratislava, Vienna or Budapest.
